Perfection is objective, and the process of growing and learning is what makes life so beautiful. The world would be so boring if we didn’t need to grow, learn, or change. Don’t be afraid to make some mistakes sometimes.

The problem is many of us don’t really think that way. My personal musical goal right now is to play piano like Errol Garner. How the heck do you start on that journey? Well, it begins with a process of breaking things down into smaller and smaller steps until you wind up with something that can be realistically accomplished in a practice session (or a few).

A narrative also plays a huge factor in the press you get as a musician. Blogs, magazines, and freelance writers/interviewers are all in the business of sharing stories. Sure, they’ll review your music, but what they really need for a successful article is some kind of hook. And if you can approach them with a well-crafted and interesting story all ready to go, you’re going to stand out from all the other artists who approach them with pleas to cover their new music.

From contemplative songwriting, to epic beats, to carefully crafted orchestrations, September’s student artists have created some memorable pieces in their Mainstage courses. Over several weeks of detailed content, constrained prompts, and personal feedback and support from a Soundfly Mentor, these students were able to explore and develop musical skills in areas like production, composition, and performance. Here are a few highlights:

A simple tip for making more engaging tracks is to add or subtract an element every four to eight bars or so. Here are a few variation approaches to try:

For chip enthusiasts, Lewis’ campaign offers a great way to get involved and support a community that’s so dependent on DIY, grassroots support. Every one of his rewards (including Game Boys!) is affordable, making this campaign easily shareable and not easy to resist.

Over our C minor chord, we get a triplet figure of all B♭s, making the chord a C minor 7. This is followed by the use of a passing tone (Ab) to get from the 7th to the 5th. Finally, over the B♭, we have an F (the fifth of the chord), moving to a G (the 13th, another tension).

My wife and I had moved to Nashville and were just starting the process of buying a house. We talked to several lenders to get pre-approval (my understanding was that it made the process go smoother), and every conversation went something like this.

“Psycho”: After 15 weeks in the Top 5, this song finally made it to #1 for a week. Good going, everyone. The form here is pretty clear-cut; it’s almost a palindrome. It’s just that the two verses have our singers doing their own thing. Like, Post Malone does this isolated line for the second half of his verse, just his own thing not to be repeated. This song, combined with others in this study, like “Look Alive,” also illustrates how important the beat is in determining the subdivision of the tempo.

As you near the end of your mixing work, keep mastering in mind and start considering what mastering can and cannot do to help finish the sound. Remember that mastering is only the work done on the combined stereo (or multi-channel surround) audio file. So if you want a particular voice turned down or keyboard turned up, for example, this should be done in the mix where you have access to these tracks independently.

Songwriters like me often draw from personal life and experience, or from the experiences of those around us; which is probably true of almost any writer in any literary format. But we may also get inspired by and invested in the characters in TV shows, films, and books as well. In fact, it is completely possible to get inspired by anything and everything in the world around you as a creative person. As long as you’re looking for it…

If you can’t use VHS, it’s likely your DAW has some kind of tape emulation or saturation plugin on hand. If not, FerricTDS is a good free option for PC users, as is Diabolique. Mac and PC users can both check out Klanghelm’s IVGI.
