With great soundproofing, even a beginner acoustic guitar can sound good on your recordings. I want to talk specifically about a few things you can do to improve soundproofing in your home studio, but if you’d like a bit more information on acoustic treatment, check out this Flypaper article on acoustic diffusers.
We live in an exciting time for music. Now more than ever, independent musicians can create, release, and earn from music while maintaining full ownership. Gone are the days when a handful of tastemakers and big businesses decide who’s in and who’s out. We, the people — the producers, the songwriters — now have the ability to “place” our music on digital “shelves” where real consumers can listen to that music and thus support the continued creative process.
So if we play the C major scale, but begin on the note D, we alter the sequence of whole and half steps. The displacement of the intervals creates a different tonality. In the key of C major, this will give us the D Dorian mode, which, as you can see, is constructed on the 2nd scale degree of the standard major scale.

Drumming and loud sound are such large parts of Puerto Rican culture, it only makes sense they’d be the focal point of this week’s protests. Take a listen!

That night, Steve Forbes, ex-Republican Presidential nominee candidate, hosted the show. The band tried to hang upside-down American flags on their set to make a statement about the forthcoming election but were told they could not do that by SNL executives. Being on the show was controversial as is, but in true Rage fashion, they had their roadies put the flags up anyway. Literally seconds before they went on, the SNL crew tried to take the flags down. Rage was ordered to leave immediately and did not get to play a second song.
“I’ve come to love these awful quality files. In most cases, listening to their lossless versions just doesn’t sound right to me. My 128 kbps version of Mario’s ‘Let Me Love You’ still has the intro skit from the music video attached, hearing the song without it is jarring. With each layer of compression you can practically hear the thousands of others who shared and copied the same MP3, like a destructive digital fingerprint…. I’ve got dozens of tracks like these on my computer still. A 58 kbps copy of Kyuss’ ‘Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop’ that sounds like it’s being played through a payphone. A bootlegged CD of Hendrix demos transcoded up from somewhere to 128 kbps.”

With three heavy-duty club EPs under his belt, the Cairo-based producer dropped his debut full-length Terminal in late 2018. It’s a dense, intricate listen that meshes hip-hop, IDM, and ambient music. ZULI’s skills as a producer are constantly on display through his unique choice of textures and his intricate, obsessive rhythms. He never loses the streetwise attitude though.
In this new series of spotlights, we’re introducing our full roster of Soundfly Mentors so you can choose who you want to work with on your next project!
The thing about Top 40 music is that it has to be easily digestible to be successful. Usually, it can’t be anything too complex — simple, singable melodies, accompanied by very logical chord changes. As it turns out, this makes pop a great place to start learning about theory and expand your harmonic knowledge.
Jeremy is a Montreal-based musician, sound artist and improviser who loves giving advice to emerging artists on how to make their tours more effective. He writes, records and performs electroacoustic “concrète” music for tape, oscillators and amplified objects and surfaces, as well as solo guitar. With overwhelmingly positive results, we’re happy to share a few select testimonials of Soundfly’s Beginner Harmonic Theory course directly from our students.
